Monkey Barrel Comedy is dedicated to making the Fringe fair, for everyone. This is about widening participation accross the spectrum; artists, industry & audiences.
Much of the existing Fringe comedy model revolves around two key principles; charge artists fees which pushes them into debt and/or get “volunteers” to do jobs that should be paid. Essentially, make as much money as you can by being a middle-man and squeeezing the people on the front-line. These practices stop the Fringe being inclusive; if you can't self-fund, you don't participate.
The current paid model often means high ticket prices and therefore prevents local communities accessing the most culturally significant art at the Fringe. The various Free Fringe operations claim to have fixed this, but it is one sided. They limit participation in the industry to those that, again, can self-fund.
We run a Pay What You Want (PWYW) model at the Fringe, which means that you can pay to reserve a seat, or you can come along and if there are available seats you can get in for free and pay what you can afford direct to the act after the show.
We beleive it is our duty to provide a fair Fringe for everyone. We therefore commit to these rules:
It's pretty simple. We are not the first to promote the idea of the Fair Fringe and good promoters were doing so before we even existed. We say thanks to them for their inspiration, and to everyone else "get on board!"
